A couple of months ago I recieved an email from an Album maker Forbeyon. They have a new senior line and they wanted to use my image "Perfection in Purple" for the ad in Rangefinder Magazine. I was shocked. At first I thought the email was spam. I almost deleted it. Then I actually read it and reread it. I was so excited.

So today when I got my Rangefinder magazine I was shocked to see the ad next to the table of contents. So cool. My name was on the same spread as Joe Buissink( a legend) Michelle Celentano and Lindsay Adler. I am so honored. Ok its just a coincidence. My new goal: next time I am published in Rangefinder magazine its a Feature story highlighting my new Art Series. A girl can dream.

Growing up we always had a real Christmas tree. It was often a sacrifice to buy the 40.00 dollar tree with a family of 11. My mother was insistent that it wasnt the same to have a fake tree. It was like you didnt believe in Christmas if you had a fake tree. We actually looked down on our neighbors and friend who had fake trees.    You might say we were Christmas tree snobs. So naturally when I grew up I had to have a REAL tree.
Wayne being the practical soul that he is. Thought this foolish and frivolous at first. He thought is smarter to spend the money on a fake Christmas tree and be done with it for 10 years. It certainly is cleaner and easier. You dont have to haul it in and away.
But I was able to sway him.
For the first 15 years of my married life I made the family come down with me to the nearest treelot to pick out the perfect tree.   The first few years it was the budget friendly 20.00 Douglas Fir. Not the prettiest. But smells amazing. Then as we expanded our budget I splurged on the more expensive and prettier Noble Fir.

About 5 years ago I caved and bought a fake white Christmas tree. I didnt want to tell my mom. I knew she would be so disappointed. I could just hear her:" I thought I raised you better than that."    I dont know what happened to me.   But here it is I Chea Lamb have not one fake tree but two.

However on Friday something snapped. Ok fine it was the lure of a cool place for a photoshoot. Obviously... I made the girls dress in grey and red.   We went down to a family friends treelot to take some fun festive pictures. Guess what I came home with? Yep a puppy. Just kidding. A REAL Christmas tree. It lured me in with its perfect shape and amazing smell and I couldnt say no. Nostalgia never smelt so good.   See mom you did raise me right!

GoodBye Summer

I thought it a fitting blog title Goodbye summer with today being the first day of Fall. I want to share 2 really awesome photoshoots that I think are the essence of summer. The BEAch. I hate to say goodbye. I wish I lived near the beach so I could say I miss the ocean air and the salt dried on my skin after a day of laying on the beach. But a girl can dream.

As I have I have matured, I have come to realize this truth more and more. . " Nothing is what it seems."
Especially when it comes to photographs. Whether it be the portraits I take or the the silly candids on FB. You can make a picture look like one thing when the real life truth is not so pretty, happy, glamorous, cute, funny, or what not.

So the question is or answer is make sure you are living enough real life and less virtual life to know if something is right or wrong. Real or not.

I read this book when my kids were little, Right Brain children in a Left Brain world:unlocking the potential of your ADD child
The first line in the book is about a child sitting in his chair at school looking outside the window and hearing the chain on the flagpole clank. Bingo thats my first memory of school. What the &*#$@!
Im ADD. And nobody told me. I prefer right brained :) No wonder I think punctuation and spelling correctly are optional. (thats what spell check is for) I prefer magazines with amazing images with color , light, shadow. This is my gift and my curse. Apparently some pretty genius people share this curse : Thomas Edison, Bill Gates, Da Vinci, Michael Jordan, Nolan Ryan, Henry Ford ect...

I think in pictures. So your talking and I am making a picture of what your saying. Wait slow down your talking to fast Im not done making my picture. Can you shift to the side the composition is off and the lighting is better over here ... ok what were you saying. Can you see how this can get very tedious to listen , much less stay focused.

Ok so I read(skim , part of my add) the book and find out its really for me and a little to help my kids, because they are 50% Wayne. Thank heavens they had a chance. They all have a little of my picture disease but each in there own way.

So after I have this epiphany in the late 90s , Ok I know what my strengths and weakness are I can cope better right. Well lately I havent been thinking in pictures GASp I know . (ADD also brings out my sarcasm and sense of irony I read in the book) I have been thinking in Country music songs.

Things I learned from NYC:

If there is a gust of wind coming up from the Subway stairsway you better hustle cause thats your train arriving. Or you will have to wait for the next one.

You can always expect to be entertained by con men on the R subway line. also expect them to ask for donations.

Be thankful when the thug behind you says dont worry Im not going to steal your purse. Smile your in New York.

Do buy Wicked tickets before you get there : all other shows buy in Times Square the morning of for 1/2 price.

I love Battery Park. It feels just like the movie "Youve got Mail"

Central Park has a softball field , the original field of dreams. Danny thinks hes big time because he plays in a league there. Whateves :)

If your at the Met Museum surrounded by the great art works of all time and your daughter is looking at the parquet flooring ... I think she is hungry and wants to go.

For as long as I can remember I have collected stuff. I am a genuine hoarder. I love anything old with character. Pantina mmm. ( google pantina) Being a photographer gives me a good reason to collect more junk.

Last weekend my sisters and I went to Prescott in search of Treasure( junk). I definitely scored.

I am toying with the idea of a mentor trip up that way. Shopping in the morning for props and shooting in the fabulous downtown of cool Prescott , untouch by the fires. Finish with an amazing dinner somewhere on Whisky row. It will be limited to 3 people.

The Giving Tree workshop

When I first moved out to QC in 2000... There was this amazing cottonwood tree and a huge sign in front of it annoucing this was the home of the Maricopa County champion Steer "Heza A Fastman" It was quite amusing. I would often wonder why they picked that name. With in few years the homesteads were gone (sold for the villages and hastings farms) and so was "Heza A Fast man" but the cottonwood remained. In 2008 I had a photo shoot planned for the groves , like the rest of the photographers in the east queen creek area. Much to my dismay irragation put a kink in my plans. So plan B ....
Oh no whats plan B? Im driving home and I think I can make that cottonwood work. So I have my Brother in law bring the "black couch " there. Wala the birth of another location. Just like a star is born. So I end up shooting some of my favorite images of that year there. Thanks Amy for trusting me.

Just when you think the tree has given all it can give , I decide to put my black piano there for some mini shoots.

Again so fun , then

prom ends up being around the same time(i think it might have been the next year) and more amazing images. It just keeps giving. Ok lets do some seniors.

Some one trys to take the piano. its ok they bring it back. Even better.

Fast forward to 2009: It gets a little busier, the tree is still giving. Not only do I get more images but so does alot of other photographers. The tree doesnt mind.

So last spring I was stopped by Mrs. Hastings worker. He doesnt mind but seems a little put out at the volume of people photographing there. Fast forward to this summer ... a chain goes up and this little sign.

A single tear. The tree will be gone soon and so will this amazing location.

So I go out driving to find another suitable location. Guess what?? I found some and that is how this Workshop was born. Three really cool locations in the QC area. The main focus will be how to set up your clients so they look their best and the best lighting hits them.

8-10am: locations and diagrams, camera settins as well as coaching with hands on shooting,
10-12 pm: individual critiques of images on what went righ and wrong as well and how to make it even better with some photoshop actions.

A story.

My sister Wendy has been bugging me to start blogging again. Ok Wendy I will if you will.

This family has been a part of my life for at least 30 years. Eric was the funniest kid at Chandler
High. Everyone loved him and wanted to be around him. I might have even had a crush on him. Dont worry Wayne your were my first crush.
I remember one time he let me cut his hair ( I had no experience , just teenage confidence) How hard can it be. Needless to say I cut a huge hole in the back of his head. He said just color it in with a black sharpee. Thats just what we did. My favorite overheard memory, of Eric is when he and Darin Johnson ran through the McClintock High Football banner before they could come out of the locker room. Classic. I am pretty sure that hasnt been done again.

Now Sharman is my cousin on my moms side. All of my favorite memories of family events involve her. I am pretty sure all of our times together were spent whistling at cute guys out the window of Mylie's or Tina's car. We were super mature.
There wasnt a guy or girl that didnt like her. Unless she just stole there boyfriend. Always the life of the party. If you have ever sat next to Sharman at a Ballgame you know what I mean. I also think Sharman gave me my earliest exposure to Design style. I always wanted my house to look like hers. Still do.

I have a vision of a beautiful antique bed , fluffy with bedding, your little girl all dressed as a fairy(or cute jammies) under a canopy of green with chandelier to complete the fantasy. And good light of course.

We will go through a shoot the way I would. So it will be a mentoring session with time to stop and ask questions and trouble shoot your individual week spots.

Horses in Hawaii

So we took the girls on a Senior Trip. I know it was frivolous and irresponsible. But hey who said I was rational. It was amazing. The girls said this was their favorite part was horseback riding on the beach. It was up on the North Shore. So cool. We came across this old Japanese cemetary. I want to be buried there. Serious piece of real estate. It definetly was my favorite place to photograph. However I will have to live with might have been photographically because I was on a horse. Thats that part about vacations I usually miss. Is actually participating because I am behind the camera. But it was a good trade.

A big thanks to Higginson Tire in Queen Creek for so graciously letting us shoot at their tire and wheel shop. As you can see from the image they have some awesome rims (not that I know anything about them) but a lot of people seem to have them on their cars :)

It seems that my visions are often bigger than the time I have to shoot. I would have loved to shoot there all afternoon. But you know kids .... they have places to be, namely a really big dance called Prom and people to see.

Its funny the gifts God gives us.

Jessica is a senior this year. I love it and hate all at the same time (mostly sad). I hate change.
Lately I have been reflecting on her childhood. Did I teach her enough? Did I teach her the things that matter?
She was such a sweet, kind girl. She is alot like her Dad. I admit I often dont understand the way she thinks. I always assumed my daughter would be like me and want to do the things I like. I thought she would love to dance, be competitive and bossy, and completly passionate about the things she loves. So far only one thing she got from me, her passion.
So after trying to get her to do the things I love, I let her choose. She choose guitar and singing. A friend once told me once I let my kid be who she really was we were both so much happier.
Who knew?
Luckily I know a great singer, guitar teacher and mentor. My uncle Jeff Arnett. Not only did he teach her to play and sing but he taught her how to write songs. He is always pushing her ways I never would or could have. And to him I am so grateful for helping her find her God given gift I couldnt have.

So here it is. The new song on my website Jeff and Jess wrote. Jess vocals , Jeff guitar.

I love you both. I am so proud.

This family was so cute. I love the challenge of the 1 year old. But we did get a canvas worthy one. I designed this border to wrap around. But alas she went with the classic image wrap. But I still love it.

I met Judy through a mutual friend. Ok the same girl that covers my grey does hers to. Did I reveal to much? I had a ball with their family in San Diego over October Break. ( no Im not behind.. just really blessed with work) As you can tell their family is a lot of fun.

Judy and Mark feel like old friends now. It may because I asked them to risk their lives in the high tide at La Jolla cliffs. It definetly wasnt calm water. I was just thankful they didnt have a 2 yr old that would have been swept away never to be seen again in the undertow. One of the sweet retirees that inhabit that stretch of the shoreline came by and gave us stern warning that only a "retiree" can. " It is really dangerous down there. I was swept out to sea and had to be rescued by the coast gaurd" True story. None the less we kept shooting. I think it was worth it. As you can see we would run out shoot for 5 seconds and then they would run from the surf to try and stay dry.

Morgan , Brooke and Taryn

I dont remember exactly what grade Taryn was in when she came home and told me that Morgan was her best friend. It might have been 2nd. She asked me if she could come over. Of course. When she brought her home I realized that Morgan was special. Morgan has Downs Syndrome. They spent the afternoon listening to High School Musical , dressing up and dancing like all young girls do.

Taryn never mentioned that Morgan might be different than her. Isnt being 7 great, when you dont notice the differences between you and everyone around you. To Taryn , everyone around her was the same... on equal footing.

You may think what a great opportunity for Morgan to be in a regular classroom setting where she got to learn different social behaviors and have academic success that may not have been otherwise possible for her.

But the biggest change was for those in the 2nd grade classroom who got to know and love Morgan as a person, peer, friend and best friend. This would not have been possible with out Morgan being there every day for the most part of the day.

One day in 4th grade Taryn came home in tears. She told me of some girls who did not know Morgan were making fun of her in the bathroom. Taryn could not believe the cruelty. Why would they try to hurt her. Maybe if they just had the chance like Taryn had in 2nd , 3rd and 4th grade to get to know her they would not have said those things.

Taryn , Morgan and Brooke(Morgans sisters in 5th grade also her other BFF) are in 5th grade now at the new Middle School. Morgan is in a different class now. She spends more time in resource than she used to. Taryn still sees Morgan at lunch , but one cant help but wonder how many more lives could be changed if Morgan still had the opportunities to be with her old peers as she did at the elementary.

Many of the decisions for our children are based on budget constrants and old ways of doing things. What we thought used to work. Morgan needs a 1/3 time helper. The regular 5th grade teacher has some 30 kids in the class room and logistically isnt possible to help Morgan with out an aid. Someone who can make sure she is where she needs to be and is on task with her abilities and yet push her to accomplish what we thought might not have been possible. With the finacial state of our school district Morgan doesnt have that person. She needs a part-time volunteer.
Maybe a high school senior who gets out of school early or someone who is looking to make a difference. I dont have the answer but I know with some research and good old fashion team work this would be possible.

Morgan isnt the only one. There are many of them who could benefit from this type of assimilation. How many Morgans are out there who didnt have the opportunities given to them that Morgans mom had to push for. How grateful I am that Taryn had the chance to get to know Morgan and love her. She has made our life better. We are more compassionate and are more likely to get to know people of all kinds around us because of her.

I know I dont have concrete answers but I do know this is a problem some of our neighbors and friends are facing. Maybe we could help with volunteering,voicing our opinion at school board meetings, or simply being aware of the situation and being an understanding friend.
Sometime the way to change is opening up our hearts and being willing to try something different.

p.s. You will notice Addie from the previous post is special person as well who also brings so much to our lives.

This family is amazing. I have know them for about 5 years now. I have been lucky enough to serve with Hayley at girls camp , teach Shelby in a Young womens class, and my favorite be Addie's sunday school teacher. (Sorry Callen Wayne being your teacher is as close as I can come)

I just love doing these photo shoots.

It is easy to look in love on your wedding day.... It is a lot harder to stay in love(look in love) with all of the daily pressures and responsibilities. You know the mortgage, laundry, dirty dishes,and the broken water heater etc...

So when I can capture this with all of the added things that come with real life,
It has to be real love.

I had the opportunity to photograph the Waisath Family for their fall catalog. They own Gold Canyon Candles. I had an extra piano. I know you are saying who has an extra piano on their back porch. Oh it nothing I say with a hand wave. Anyways. I painted it this fabuloso green. I adore it. They were such a lovely family. Thanks Waisath's I had a ball. And I got a green piano out of it. Yea!!

I was running the other morning, contemplating the drama in my life. I was using my little sisters ipod and this song came on that said exactly what I was feeling.

"Everyone lets you down sometime, it is just a matter of how far down they go."

Profound huh? So I was thinking how far down is directly proportional to how close you are to them. We have all experienced betrayal of some kind, it just seems to hurt a lot more when you think you are safe.

So here is the purpose of my post. How do you teach your children that even though this is bound to happen that the rewards of trust and friendship outweigh the hurt of deception and betrayal. The are just part of the risk.

ok I know I am not usually very cerebral but I have my moments. :)

I saw this mustang when I was walking out of the Walmart parking lot. I knew it would be perfect for this photo shoot. I gave the guy in the car my card and asked if he would be interested in trading a photoshoot for the use of his car. Too funny. He went home and his wife agreed. I took my girls to Utah for a Efy last week. I did a little work while I was up there. I have a Bride and Groom who are up there for summer school ... so what better place to do Bride and Groom portraits(those pics to come later). Small detail , I need a piece of furniture. I told my husband I wanted to tie down my sette to the top of my suv. He has been married to me long enough to know I was serious. So I drive 800 miles with it on top of my car. I know I am certifiable but what are you going to do. You have to be true to yourself :)

Lucky for my cousins with cute toddlers and small children. They seemed to think it was normal. I love these pics of their kids. Small note this is where my "career " started. I took a photography class at the Y that started my passion. Some of my favorite pics from that class have the same snow covered mountains and the same train. Some things never change.

She is a former college cheerleader, pulse dance center teacher and Fiesta Bowl Soloist Champion.

The dances taught will be Hannah Montana style and funky(clean) Hip hop

The Windmill not to be confused with the Olive Mill( really good food). I found this great place in Florence for Weddings and Events. It has an vintage Red Barn with Cathedral Ceilings brought from the Midwest. There is a operating nursery on site as well as original outbuildings. Lots of authentic Down home charm mixed with touches of Elegance. Katie the event coordinator was so kind to let me shoot a few photos. I didnt get any wide angles (but I am hoping to be invited back) We went at 10 am. you know how I feel about harsh lighting. you can check out there web site at thewindmillaz.com

Ok I admit from time to time I get jealous of my clients. I want romatic , fun , fabulous photos of me and Wayne. It just that I am not that photogenic. (code for really picky) Anyways for our anniversary which happens to be the day after VDay the girls took pics of us. I think it was kind of traumatic for them. We didnt get any great kissing ones. I think we were trying not to scar them to much. However they did get some ,I do love. Is this vain showing you?

I am so blessed to married to a great , kind, funny handsome man. I dont deserve him. He keeps me sane. I love you Wayne.
